FREQUENTLY ASKED

What you may be wondering

How long does nose surgery take?

The duration depends on the extent of the planned reshaping, the technique chosen and whether you have had nose surgery before. Your surgeon will give you the time that applies to your case once the consultation and planning are complete.

How long do swelling and bruising last after surgery?

Marked swelling and discolouration usually subside during the first few weeks, while the finer swelling takes months to resolve completely. Skin thickness is one of the most important factors here, which is why the timeline differs from person to person.

What is the difference between open and closed rhinoplasty?

In the closed technique every incision stays inside the nostrils. In the open technique a small incision is added to the narrow strip of skin between the two nostrils, so the framework of the nose can be seen directly while the surgeon works. Neither is absolutely superior; the choice follows the anatomy and the planned reshaping.

Is the operation painful?

The procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic. Afterwards most people describe a blocked nose and a feeling of pressure rather than pain. Pain is managed with the medication your surgeon recommends, and individual experience varies.

What is a suitable age for nose surgery?

The general approach is that growth of the nose should be complete, and that point differs from person to person. Rather than an upper age limit, what matters is your general health and your suitability for anaesthesia. The decision follows the consultation and any necessary tests.

When can I go back to work or school?

A return to desk work usually becomes possible once the splint has been removed. Heavy physical activity, contact sports and exercise that raises the heart rate call for a longer wait. The exact timing is agreed at your follow-up appointment.

Will breathing become harder after surgery?

In the first few days a blocked feeling caused by swelling inside the nose is expected, and it settles with time. If you already have difficulty breathing it is important to say so at the first consultation, so that the plan also covers an assessment of the septum and the airway.

When can a revision (second) operation be carried out?

Because the tissues need to settle and the swelling to resolve, the wait is usually at least a year after the first operation. Where the airway is involved the timing may be different; the surgeon who examines you decides.

I am travelling from another city or from abroad — how does the process work?

We run travel, accommodation and appointment planning from a single centre. Your consultation, procedure and check-up appointments are gathered into one calendar, and the length of your stay is shared with you in advance on that basis.

The information here is general; an answer specific to you follows a consultation.
